Participant Observational Method
Participant observation, as a qualitative research method, is used in diverse areas of study. The central concept extends beyond merely observing the participants but also includes active engagement in their activities. In most cases, the researcher may have to be integrated into the environment or setting of the participants while simultaneously staying observant to note every on-going thing as the primary source of information. Thus, at the commencement of the study, the researcher should gain entry into the participant’s environment, establish a rapport or meaningful interaction with them, and spend a reasonable amount of time with the participants to obtain a substantial amount of data (Bryant, 2015). The sole reason for using this method is to gain in-depth insight into specific parameters and acquire various types of information that may not be easily accessed from an outsider’s position.
Thus, by integrating oneself and becoming a part of the group or aligning with the focus area of the participants, the researcher can acquire valid data. Also, with most mainstream data collection methods, when participants are aware that they are being observed, they may modify their behaviour (Willig, 2019).
